Bentuk Sayap Ulama Umno Segera!

Utusan moots Umno ulama wing
By Yow Hong Chieh
KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Umno should form an ulama (religious scholars) wing to attract Malay voters disenchanted by PAS’s “hypocritical” jettisoning of Islamic ideals following losses suffered by the Islamist party’s ulama faction in internal polls recently, Utusan Malaysia said today.
Assistant chief editor Datuk Zaini Hassan said in his Cuit column that the Barisan Nasional (BN) lynchpin should take full advantage of this growing resentment towards PAS, which has alienated Malays by “very obviously” straying from its Islamist agenda in its lust for federal power.
“Umno should use this wide open chance to win back support from Malays who love Islam,” he said.
“Many Malays out there are not only patriotic but care deeply about the fight for Islam.”
Zaini said the party should expand the Umno Youth ulama secretariat (Ilmu) into a full wing comprising a chief ulama, deputy chief ulama and executive councillors who would then carry out missionary work nationwide in a more organised and systematic manner.
Aggressive missionary work was critical in light of the growing assertiveness of other religions following the “confusion” about Islam caused by PAS, he said.
Zaini said this was in line with Umno’s consistent championing of Islam, which can be seen in the increasing number of women who wear headscarves (tudung) and the rise of the Islamic banking sector.
“Umno’s rule, if examined carefully, is thoroughly Islamic. If not, we would not have achieved what we have today,” he said.
“We all live in peace and harmony in this country. PAS people, DAP and PKR people all live lavish lifestyles under the current administration. If they deny it, they are lying to themselves and to the people.”
He said that former PAS No. 2 and ulama Nasharudin Mat Isa should follow in the footsteps of former party leaders who left the opposition party to carry on their fight for Islam in Umno.
Nasharudin lost the deputy presidency to former vice-president Mohamad Sabu in the recently concluded PAS election, which saw the professional or “Erdogan” faction edge out conservative ulama candidates for top leadership posts.
Analysts say the 1,100 PAS delegates had decided to reject pro-unity ulama elements as they were confident that the party would do well in the next general election without linking up with Umno.
The party has since come under attack from Umno leaders, who have accused PAS of abandoning its Islamic principles to work with “anti-Islamic” Chinese-majority DAP rather than a Malay party such as Umno.
